Choosing the Right Motor for Your Door
There is no universal garage motor. Two things decide which unit goes on your door: how the door moves, and how much it weighs.
Common repairs and warning signs
- Sectional overhead — a rail-and-trolley operator mounted on the ceiling, pulling the door up its tracks. Needs clear ceiling depth behind the opening.
- Roll-up (roller) — a tube motor fitted to the roller axle above the opening, turning the drum directly. No ceiling rail needed.
- Tilt-up / single panel — a rail-and-trolley operator with a tilt-door arm and bracket. The swing-out arc is checked before fitting.
- Side-sliding — a sliding-door operator on the side track. Fewer compatible units — confirmed on assessment.
Sectional and roll-up doors do not use the same motor — the door type is confirmed before any motor is quoted or bought.
Door weight matters just as much as the mechanism. A single Chromadek door and a double meranti door are not the same job, and a motor sized for the first will fail early on the second — Century Doors sizes every motor from the door's actual material, size and construction rather than fitting one model to everything.
